Did you know that turkeys love to be patted, stroked and cuddled?
I used to follow a Facebook page called Esther the Wonder Pig. Esther’s dads also lived with a dog, a cat, and … a turkey! Yes, Cornelius the Turkey (seen above) was one of the family. I adored Cornelius (he’s since gone over the rainbow bridge). To be honest, until I saw Cornelius’ love for his “roommates” (a human, a pig and a dog), I didn’t realize that fowl have feelings, too. They do. Cornelius had a delightful personality, loved to be petted, kept company with his friends all day, and liked to snuggle indoors with the dog and his dads. I ask you—could you have eaten him? Of course you couldn’t, any more than you would eat your dog or cat.
I had not until recently in my 40+ years of being vegetarian (now pesca-vegetarian) tried to convince anyone else to give up eating animals. I’m reconsidering that. I do suggest that you think about what you are eating, not only as to harmful chemicals and hormones that might be introduced to your body through animal food, or the damage to the environment, but whether the animals you eat deserve to be made to live in circumstances that are nothing short of torture and to die in pain and fear.
Maybe you’ll consider trying a plant-based turkey substitute this Thanksgiving and in the coming holidays? There are so many great options available now! Turkeys are sentient creatures who can feel affection for humans. Can we feel a little affection for them, or at least not harm them?
